Recycling and Trash

Recycling and Trash

Sections for the Village and the Town recycling and trash handling follow.  They are followed by a section on where to dispose of hazardous materials.

Village

The Village Department of Public Works (DPW) removes trash from the receptacles in the Village Business district.  The DPW does not pick up residential trash.

Residential trash removal is through independent curbside haullers arranged by the resident.  For a list of curbside haulers in our area, please visit this Ulster County Resource Recovery Agency (UCRRA) pageIf you are new to Saugerties and would like opinions about one hauler versus another, you can ask on such social sites as https://nextdoor.com (requires sign-up) and the Village of Saugerties Facebook page.

The Village DPW provides “Spring Cleanup” – Village residents may clean up their property and put yard waste - brush, limbs and leaves - curbside to be picked up.  In the Fall the DPW provides “Leaf Pickup” – residents may rake their leaves to the curb for pickup.  The brush and leaves are processed into mulch.  The dates for these cleanup/pickup days are typically around:

  • Mid-April for Spring Cleanup - (You can include discarded Christmas trees, as long as the tree's trunk is less then 6 inches in diameter and has been cut into lengths that are less then 6 feet)

  • Mid-November for the Fall Leaf Pickup

For specific dates, please stay tuned to the Village home page and the Village Facebook page, and/or TV23.

Village residents may bring yard waste and leaves to the Steele Place drop-off area for disposal any week of the year, on Fridays from  7:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m.   Post-Christmas, if you want to deposit your tree there, you can do so (again, on Fridays).

A garbage and recycling service (including cardboard) is available at Steele Place on Wednesday 7:30 a.m. – 2:00 p.m. and Saturday 7:30 a.m. – 1:00 p.m.  Recycling (including cardboard) is FREE and garbage is charged based on the size of the bag.

Disposal of Household Hazardous Materials

If you don't find a place for immediate disposal of your batteries, keep in mind that Ulster County Resource Recovery Agency (UCRRA) typically has 3 collection events each year for hazardous household items. This year, they will be held

  • June 27th (Kingston)
  • August 1st (New Paltz)
  • and October 24th (Kingston). These events are VERY well run. Drive in, drop off and drive out.

On this site - https://ucrra.org/waste-recycling/hazardous/hhw-events/ -- they list what they do and do not take, at these events.

Also, for items they don't take, they list a UCRRA link - "A-to-Z Recyclopedia" -- for alternative disposal options, including alkaline (turns out you can just throw them in your garbage, but there are other options), automotive and rechargeable (including NiCad and Lithium).
